Manufacturing added 24,000 US jobs in April with the bulk of gains taking place among makers of durable goods. The increase came while the nation’s unemployment rate reached its lowest level in more than 17 years. The durable goods sector added 18,000 with non-durable goods adding 6000, according to a breakdown by industry released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Major gainers included machinery, up 8400 jobs, and fabricated metal products, up 3900. The transportation category added 1800 jobs.
